about

There would not have been a power pop community in Los Angeles in the 90s (no, really. there was one) had it not been for the efforts of two guys.

Larry Mann was one.

And the writer of this song was the other.

Anthony Douglas Perkins.

Lead singer of Martin Luther Lennon.

I was fired from his band at least four times I remember.

He is quite possibly one of the best songwriters this city ever produced.

As evidenced by this example.

A love poem to white middle class fear.

lyrics

If you go west a fan of their best
There’s something that you should know.
Ask anybody there and they’ll tell you so.

There’s no need to needle and plead
Ask and you shall receive
All you have to do is just believe that there’s

No Junkies In West Hills
No Junkies In West Hills
No Junkies In West Hills at all

Nobody dies up in the skies
Helicopters bounce and play
Over the happy homes of wood and clay

And there’s a parade down the Main Street
All the townsfolk have lined the way
See them there in the town square
Laughing as you hear them say
